What you can buy with a gift card

When you redeem an App Store & iTunes Gift Card, you add credit to your Apple ID balance. You can use that credit to make purchases in the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple TV app, or Apple Books. Or you can use the credit to upgrade your iCloud storage or pay for subscriptions like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, or Apple News+.

You can’t use your credit to buy gifts for someone else or buy more gift cards. You also can’t share credit with family members, even if you use Family Sharing.

Locate your redemption code

When you redeem a gift card, you'll be asked for the card's redemption code. Peel or gently scratch off the label on the back of the gift card to reveal a 16-digit code that starts with an X. (If you have an older card, the number might appear in a different place.) If your code is damaged or illegible, contact Apple Support.

Promotional content codes might not have a sticker, might not be 16 digits, and might not start with an X.

Redeem a gift card or code on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Open the App Store app.
At the bottom of the screen, tap Today.
At the top of the screen, tap the sign-in button or your photo.
Tap 'Redeem Gift Card or Code.' If you don’t see “Redeem Gift Card or Code,” sign in with your Apple ID. Learn what to do if you forgot your Apple ID.
Tap 'Use Camera' and follow the instructions on the screen. If you have an older card or you're in certain countries or regions, you might not be able to redeem a card with your camera. Tap 'You can also enter your code manually,' then follow the instructions on the screen.
- If you have an App Store & iTunes Gift Card, enter the 16-digit code, which starts with X, from the back of the card.
- If you have a promo or content code, enter the code from the back of the card.
Tap Done.

Redeem a gift card or code on your computer

On your Mac, open the App Store.
Click your name or the sign-in button in the sidebar.
Click 'Redeem Gift Card.'
Tap 'Use Camera' and follow the instructions on the screen. If you have an older card or you're in certain countries or regions, you might not be able to redeem a card with your camera. Tap 'You can also enter your code manually,' then follow the instructions on the screen.
- If you have an App Store & iTunes Gift Card, enter the 16-digit code, which starts with X, from the back of the card.
- If you have a promo or content code, enter the code from the back of the card.

Using a PC?

If you're using a PC, redeem your gift card in iTunes. From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Account, then choose Redeem, then sign in and follow the instructions on the screen.

Redeem a gift card on your Android device

On your Android device, you can use gift cards only for Apple Music subscriptions.

Open the Apple Music app.
Tap the menu button , then tap Account.
Tap 'Redeem Gift Card or Code.'
Enter the code from the back of the card, then tap Redeem.

If you received an App Store & iTunes Gift Card by email

To redeem a gift card that someone emailed to you, open the email and tap or click the 'Redeem Now' button.

If you can’t redeem a gift card or content code

If you see a message that your card is invalid, inactive, or has already been redeemed, learn what to do.

If your code is damaged or illegible, contact Apple Support.

In macOS Mojave, redeeming a gift card is much easier. You can find the Redeem button at the bottom of every page!

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That's why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

Click on your Account icon in the bottom left corner of the Mac App Store window.
Click on View Information.

Your iTunes Gift Card balance is listed as Apple ID Balance.

How to find an app or game you downloaded with a promo code

If you receive a promo code (also called a content code) for an app or game, after you redeem it, it will begin downloading automatically.

Launch the Mac App Store on your Mac.
Click on Purchased section in the Mac App Store.
The app or game you just downloaded will be at the top of the list. If the download is finished, click on Open to open it.

Thanks to a Mac App Store redesign, it's much easier to find apps and games you've purchased with a download code in macOS Mojave.

Launch the Mac App Store on your Mac.
Click on your Account icon in the lower left corner of the Mac App Store window.
